Everyone Loves a WR Sleeper

Late-round WRs, a New York State of Mind for Hard Knocks, and Parris Campbell on the move?

Welcome to the Deep Dive Fantasy Newsletter, a once-weekly fantasy football publication coming to your inbox all summer long (weekly volume will increase throughout the summer and into the NFL season).

Steals at the WR position are key to season-long success in fantasy football whether you’re playing in best ball, redraft, or even Guillotine-type formats. Snagging Justin Jefferson at the 1.01 or Tee Higgins in the mid-second are no-brainers, but hitting on those late-round guys can lead to some serious trophy-hoisting moments. Here are a few of my favorite double-digit WRs, along with their current ADP in both Yahoo redraft (according to 4for4’s multi-site tool) and Underdog Best Ball formats, along with their current 4for4 ranking.

Rashid Shaheed (Saints) - Yahoo ADP - 15.08, UD - 14.09 (WR74), Rank: WR67

Michael Thomas has had trouble getting on the field, and Shaheed could be second in NO in targets. The Saints have one of the softest schedules at the WR position in 2023.

Zay Jones (Jaguars) - Yahoo ADP - 11.10, UD - 10.10 (WR55), Rank: WR43

Jones saw the 18th most targets at WR in 2022 and the Jags threw at the 9th highest rate in the NFL. Even with Calvin Ridley now in the mix, he should still draw enough volume to outperform current draft capital.

Romeo Doubs (Packers) - Yahoo ADP - 12.06, UD 11.07 (WR58), Rank: WR50

While drafters are overpaying for Christian Watson in the fourth round, Doubs is becoming Jordan Love’s go-to guy. We have no idea what’s going to actually happen in this new-look offense, so I’m going for the contrarian WR while others take Watson too early and drool over fresh meat Jaylen Reed.

Alec Pierce (Colts) - Yahoo ADP - 17.07, UD 13.03 (WR66), Rank: WR94

Pierce caught some fire at the end of 2022, putting up an average fantasy WR5 performance in his last five games, including a WR14 output in Week 14. We don’t know exactly how good QB Anthony Richardson will be but getting his WR2 for so cheap could pay off handsomely.

  • The New York Jets could be the subject of Hard Knocks for the 2023 season whether they like it or not. Packers 2.0 should make for an interesting version of the HBO documentary-type show with plenty of storylines and characters to focus on.

  • Dalvin Cook to Miami rumors are heating up again as there was an alleged offer on the table from the Dolphins, with no decision yet from the former Viking RB. It would seem that number didn’t jive well with Cook and he’s waiting to see if he can get more of the bag. Miami’s RB room is already muddy without Cook, so stay posted for updates on how to draft them all if the 27-year-old settles in South Florida.

  • More player suspensions will be handed down this week for gambling according to Adam Schefter. The first and only name released thus far is Colts cornerback and kick returner, Isaiah Roberts. More info to come!

  • Adam Schefter also released a handy photo of all 32 teams’ dates and locations for upcoming training camps. Get ready to overreact to touchdown passes, quad photos, and way-too-early volume.

There weren’t any huge moves this week on Underdog but here’s a look at the biggest risers and fallers in ADP from 6/22 - 6/29.

🚀 Parris Campbell (Giants) - Was: 193.2, Now: 177.8, Jump: 15.4

I guess people remembered that the former Colt is now one of 234 Giants WRs.

🚀 Kenneth Gainwell (Eagles) - Was: 181.6, Now: 175.6 Jump: 6

The guy is on an elite offense with a stellar o-line and is still eight rounds cheaper than D’Andre Swift.

🚀 Luke Musgrave (Packers) - Was: 204.1, Now: 198.6, Jump: 5.5

Camp buzz has been all positive for the rookie and drafters are looking for any tight end to grab onto at this point due to the grossness of the position. Throw those darts.

 🪂 Jalin Hyatt (Giants) - Was: 170, Now: 182.6, Slide: 12.6

As I mentioned above, the Giants are standing room only at WR, and Hyatt isn’t making a great impression. The rookie ran with the third team at the last minicamp.

🪂 Trey Lance (49ers) - Was: 200, Now: 209.5, Slide: 9.5

Brock Purdy seems to be on schedule for recovery and it’s looking like the 49ers QB job is his to lose. Lance and Darnold are still there so you never know, I guess.

 🪂 Wan’Dale Robinson (Giants) - Was: 181.3, Now: 190.7, Slide: 9.4

He’s attempting a comeback from an ACL tear and will need to fight off a very crowded WR corps.

Yes, the QB position is having a quasi-renaissance in 2023, but why are so many people taking several of them at the top of Underdog drafts in a non-Superflex format? I’ve recently been in Best Ball Manias or any of the more inexpensive iterations (Puppy, Poodle, Chihuahua) and there are multiple drafters selecting two and even three QBs in the first six rounds.

I’m sure you’re thinking, that’s great, it helps your team and you can scoop up the insane value at the other positions. While that is true, it messes with the flow of the whole draft and causes other players to panic, leaving the QB position super gross before we even get to double digits.

While I’m one that likes to enter a best ball draft very flexible in strategy, all the QB hoarders are just killing the good-draft vibes.
