Together with GameBlazers: The Next Generation of Fantasy Sports

The Deep Dive Fantasy Newsletter comes to your inbox seven days a week throughout the NFL season, and I bring you the Monday recap each and every week. For those of you who don’t know me, I helped create DynastyLeagueFootball back in 2006 and have been writing about fantasy football for nearly 20 years.

I truly love this time of year, so let’s get to it!

As always, some serious storylines developed in Week 13. Let’s take a look at some of the headlines you could easily see today as the fantasy world reacts.

Short Hill to Climb

Tyreek Hill needs to average fewer than 100 receiving yards per game (96.6) to break Calvin Johnson’s single-season yardage record of 1,964 and just over 100 (103.8) in the next five games to become the NFL’s first-ever 2,000-yard receiver. It was just another day at the office for Hill against Washington as he posted five more catches for 157 yards and two more scores for his best fantasy week since the opener. He’s one player honestly capable of winning fantasy leagues almost on his own and I can’t imagine many are betting against this record falling.

Sam, I am

The performances of Deebo Samuel (four catches, 116 receiving yards, 22 rushing yards, three total touchdowns) and Sam LaPorta (nine catches for 140 yards and one touchdown) led receivers and tight ends, respectively this week. This was a much-needed performance from Samuel, who really hasn’t looked the same since his magical 2021 season. As for LaPorta, he’s solidified himself as a “set it and forget it” TE1 the rest of the way.

Houston Rocket

There are always some surprise players who end up deciding fantasy leagues and Nico Collins of the Texans looks poised to be this year’s playoff wild card. With Tank Dell lost for the season, Collins posted nine catches for a whopping 191 yards and a touchdown today. On the season, Collins now has four games with more than 20 fantasy points and just three in single digits. He’s locked into fantasy lineups the rest of the way and his value is skyrocketing.

Bride-al Shower

Trey McBride has clearly arrived and today punctuated it. He was showered with six more catches, six more targets, and 68 more receiving yards than any other Cardinals player today. It seems McBride is going to make a run at upper-tier status for the position by the end of the season. He’s a locked-in player in lineups from this point moving forward and looks like option 1A in the desert moving forward.

Out of Charge

What in the world is going on in Los Angeles? The Chargers offense has completely stalled out and they scored only six points in a win against the Patriots this week. Austin Ekeler’s performance is especially concerning. So far this year, he has just 446 rushing yards on 3.5 yards per carry, which is a career low. While still an easy RB1 play each week, the elite status he’s had in years past seems to be fading away.

As always, there were injuries destined to affect fantasy leagues. After a quiet week 12, fantasy managers were paid back this week with some serious injuries that will affect the outcomes of leagues all over the world.

As we mentioned before, Tank Dell of the Texans suffered a broken fibula and is likely headed to injured reserve. It’s a shame as he emerged as one of the best rookies this season.

Rhamondre Stevenson suffered what looked to be a serious leg injury but initial reports indicate it’s “just” a sprain. Stevenson is likely to miss some time but we’ll see if he indeed dodged a bullet here.

Kenny Pickett left the Steelers game with an ankle injury. He needs to be back on the field quickly to solidify himself as the long-term answer for Pittsburgh. Stay tuned.

Derek Carr’s first season has been a mess in New Orleans and that was made worse as he was knocked out of the Saints game with a concussion that seems to include shoulder and back injuries.

Brian Robinson suffered a hamstring injury and had to exit his game as well. We’ll keep an eye on this one as hamstring injuries can be tricky.

The Jaguars and Bengals cap off the week and it’s a pivotal game in the AFC. We have two big questions!

1.) Can Jake Browning maintain the fantasy values within the Cincinnati offense?

The loss of Joe Burrow cannot be understated. Fantasy enthusiasts are desperate for production from Joe Mixon, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and the rest of the offense. If Browning can’t get things going, this is going to be tragic in fantasy leagues.

2.) What will Calvin Ridley do next?

With three touchdowns in his past two games, it seems Ridley may just emerge again to be a viable fantasy option. Three straight big games would be huge for fantasy managers who need him as we approach the fantasy playoffs.
