🛍️ Needs for All 32 NFL Teams
Franshise Tag & Dynasty, too!
In today’s newsletter, I chat a little franchise tagging and go over some NFL offseason needs, plus we’ll hear from Ryan McDowell at DLF on some pertinent dynasty info.
The franchise tag window began yesterday, February 20th at 4:00 PM ET and will remain open until 4:00 PM ET on March 5th. There isn’t usually a rush of activity in this area as teams will likely see how things go at the upcoming combine and use that opportunity to get deals done.
When a tag is given to a player, both sides have until mid-July to agree on a multi-year extension. If no agreement is reached by the deadline, the player then will have to play on a one-year tender. As we’ve seen in the past - most recently with Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs - sides can negotiate other terms after the deadline within a one-year time frame.
There are three tender options:
Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag - This is the most common tag and the one most are likely referring to when talking about franchise tags. It’s a one-year tender that’s the average of the top five salaries at the player's position over the last five years, or 120% of his previous salary, whichever is higher.
Exclusive Franchise Tag - This one is pretty rare since the exclusivity raises the pay scale. Unlike the non-exclusive, the teams here retain the sole rights to negotiate with a player. It is also a one-year tender that’s the average of the top five salaries at the player's position over the last five years, or 120% of his previous salary, whichever is higher.
Transition Tag - This one-year tender takes the average of the top-10 salaries at the position as opposed to the top five with the franchise tag. The original team gets the right of first refusal to match any offer a player might receive from another team. Each NFL team gets only one tag in a year. An NFL player can be tagged up to three times by his team, with a spike in pay for each one.
Some players of note who could be tagged in 2024: Tee Higgins, WR (Bengals), Saquon Barkley, RB (Giants), Josh Allen, LB (Jaguars), Brian Burns, DE (Panthers), Baker Mayfield, QB (Buccaneers)
