šŸ’ø Overvalued Fantasy Players

Possible Busts and Injury Report

Welcome to the Deep Dive Fantasy Newsletter, a now twice-weekly fantasy football publication coming to your inbox all summer long.

We hear and see a lot of talk about sleepers, but rarely focus on the overvalued guys. Hereā€™s a look at one player at each position with the potential to bust or not return their draft capital in 2023.

šŸ¶ QB - Deshaun Watson, CLE (Yahoo ADP: QB10, 8.04)

After missing a full season plus 11 contests, Watsonā€™s return was not great in both real or fantasy football terms. In six starts, he had just one fantasy QB1 outing and finished as the QB25 in fantasy points per game with a meager 14.3. Watson was at the bottom in nearly all efficiency metrics, ranking 36 of 39 in completion percentage (58%), 35th in adjusted yards per attempt (4.8), and 26th in catchable passes (83.2%). While we should see some improvement, drafting him all the way up among the top 10 is too aggressive.

šŸ‚ RB - Dameon Pierce, HOU (Yahoo ADP: RB20, 4.12)

Sexy Rex(y) Burkhead is no longer in Houston to vulture touches, and coming off an impressive rookie campaign it would appear to be all systems go for a Pierce RB party, but he could be a disappointment for those expecting a solid fantasy RB2 performance in 2023. The 23-year-old is returning from a season-ending ankle injury he suffered in Week 14 and will have some fresh competition in Devin Singletary who signed a hefty contract with the Texans this offseason, indicating they plan to use him. Singletary likely wonā€™t steal the RB1 job from Pierce, but he is more of a threat to volume than drafters may realize and with a new coaching staff and scheme, a high RB workload isnā€™t guaranteed for anyone.

šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø WR - Chris Godwin, TBB (Yahoo ADP: WR28, 7.02)

Tom Brady isnā€™t walking through the door in Tampa Bay (at least we think) and he was the key to Godwinā€™s fantasy success in recent years. The Bucs WR is so adept in the slot which paired well with Bradyā€™s fast release. Regardless of who wins the QB job which is looking like Baker Mayfield, it will be a downgrade for Godwin in accuracy and most likely volume, as Tampa Bay had the highest number of passing attempts in the NFL in 2022 with Brady at the helm (751). it could be tough to return value as the 28th WR off draft boards this season.

šŸŖŗ TE - Kyle Pitts, ATL (Yahoo ADP: TE5, 6.03)

I know, how dare I besmirch the name of our lord and savior Kyle Pitts? Well, weā€™ve seen HC Arthur Smith not feature him properly and not scheme enough passes for the TE so itā€™s tough to count on Pitts receiving his due volume again in 2023. With Desmond Ridder under center and such a heavy investment in a rookie RB (Bijan Robinson), itā€™s difficult to see Pitts putting up similar numbers to players being drafted around him like Terry McLaurin, Tyler Lockett, or even DeAndre Hopkins.

  • It appears to be a soft tissue injury for Atlanta RB Cordarrelle Patterson, who HC Arthur Smith said is likely out for the remainder of the preseason.

  • Tampa Bay WR Russell Gage was carted off the field on Wednesday afternoon and will allegedly miss the entire 2023 season with a knee injury.

  • WR Treylon Burks was also carted from practice after walking off with help from trainers on Wednesday with what is being referred to as an LCL sprain. He should only be sidelined for a few weeks which is a positive outcome.

  • Rookie Jordan Addison experienced some light concussion symptoms after hitting the ground during a two-minute drill on Wednesday. Heā€™s in the protocol but should return shortly.

  • Carolina WR Terrace Marshall ā€œtweaked a little something in his backā€ during Mondayā€™s practice according to HC Frank Reich, and after undergoing a full scan, is only expected to miss a few weeks.

  • Speaking of the Panthers, they placed WR Damiere Byrd on IR on Wednesday. IR will essentially end his season unless he and the team agree to an injury settlement, allowing him to be waived by Carolina and possibly signing elsewhere once healed.
