🏆 Super Bowl Fun Facts

Plus a unique prop

Welcome to a special Super Bowl episode of the Deep Dive Fantasy newsletter, filled with fun facts and other oddities. There’s also a fun prop bet for this week’s game.

The final weekend of NFL football is here so we need to savor it all before we have to actually make plans and get out into the world on Sundays until the fall. I decided to look into some interesting Super Bowl facts and trivia to get everyone in the mood for this final battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

1. What Team Has the Most Super Bowl Appearances?

🎖️ The New England Patriots have appeared in a whopping 11 NFL title games. (1986, 1997, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) The Steelers, Cowboys, Broncos, and 49ers tie for the second-most times competing in the Super Bowl with eight.

2. Which Team has the Most Super Bowl Wins?

🍔 The Steelers and 🎖️ Patriots are currently tied with six wins a piece. San Francisco is right behind them with five Lombardi Trophies.

3. What Teams Have Never Played in a Super Bowl?

Four teams have yet to reach the big game much to the chagrin of their loyal fan bases.

  • 🦁 Detroit Lions

  • 🐆 Jacksonville Jaguars

  • 🐶 Cleveland Browns

  • 🐂 Houston Texans

4. What City Has Hosted the Most Super Bowls?

It’s no surprise that sunny Miami has hosted the most Super Bowls throughout history, with 11. That changes this year as New Orleans will reach 11, too, after Super Bowl 59.

5. How Many Super Bowl Rematches Have Taken Place?

We love a rematch or revenge game and there were eight instances, now nine with this year’s rematch of the 2022 championship. Prior rematches include:

  • 🤠 Dallas Cowboys vs. 🍔 Pittsburgh Steelers

  • 🐬 Miami Dolphins vs. 🪖 Washington

  • ⛏️ San Francisco 49ers vs. 🐯 Cincinnati Bengals

  • 🤠 Dallas Cowboys vs. 🦬 Buffalo Bills

  • 🎖️ New England Patriots vs. 🧢 New York Giants

  • 🦅 Philadelphia Eagles vs. 🎖️ New England Patriots

  • 🎖️ New England Patriots vs. 🐏 LA Rams

  • ⛏️ San Francisco 49ers vs.↠ Kansas City Chiefs

6. Who Sang the Longest National Anthem?

Alicia Keyes belted out the anthem for two minutes and 36 seconds at the start of Super Bowl 47 which is the longest on record. On the flip side, Neil Diamond sang the shortest version at Super Bowl 21 which lasted just one minute and two seconds.

7. How Much Does the Lombardi Trophy Weigh?

The elusive Lombardi trophy is crafted each season by the famous jeweler Tiffany & Co. and is valued at $50,000. It weighs just seven pounds so is easily hoisted or tossed from boat to boat by a certain inebriated QB. 🏆

8. What’s the Coldest Super Bowl on Record?

As mentioned above, the big game usually takes place in warmer climates, or at least in an indoor venue. Super Bowl IV took place at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans in 1970 where temperatures were a cool 39 degrees. The Chiefs beat the Vikings 23-7 in that chilly title game.

9. What’s the Highest Scoring Super Bowl Contest?

The ⛏️ 49ers and⚡️Chargers combined for a whopping 75 total points in Super Bowl XXIX. Thanks to Steve Young and Jerry Rice, the Niners beat San Diego 49-26. (Also fun fact: I was there in person, way up in the second to last row of Joe Robbie Stadium)

10. What’s the Average Price of a ticket to the Last 5 Super Bowls?

Thanks to Wallethub I found this nice little graphic. Tickets on the resale market for Super Bowl 59 are currently averaging around $11,067!

11. Who Was the First Super Bowl Half-Time Singer?

Broadway star Carol Channing sang in 1970 during that frigid Super Bowl in Tulane Stadium. She wasn’t the main act though, as the Southern University marching band performed a Mardi Gras tribute first, followed by Channing’s rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In”.

12. Favorite Super Bowl Foods

Once again, thanks to Wallethub, we can get a nice, clean graphic of what folks like to eat for the big game. Wings earned the top spot as fans’ favorite go-to food for football watching. Most of the rest of these items make perfect sense and can be found at most gatherings for the title game. The sweet items surprise me a bit as I’m personally all about the salty and fried, but I guess balancing it out with a cookie or brownie works.

13. What About the Drinks?

We can’t forget about beverage consumption during the Super Bowl. Here are the numbers.

14. Is There a Super Bowl Hangover?

16.1M people won’t be at work the day after the big game, which amounts to around $9.3B in lost productivity for companies. I think we can all agree it should be a National Holiday, but alas.

Longest FG U47.5 (-114 FD, -115 DK, -105 MGM)

I will be releasing a bunch of unique props for a half unit like I did last year, this one included.

Chiefs K Harrison Butker had a knee injury mid-season, forcing him on IR. In the six games since he returned, Butker has just one attempt of 50+ which he missed, and hasn't made a FG longer than 44 yards in that span.

Eagles K Jake Elliott has been one of the worst kickers from distance this season. He has made just 3-of-9 attempts from 48+ yards. Elliott has made just 77.8% of his kicks on the season overall, good for 19th among other kickers.

I expect both teams to be uber-aggressive in 4th and short situations as well. The opportunity for them to even attempt a 48+ yarder has to be a 4th and long from the 31-to ~35-yard line and even if they do attempt it, Elliott has straight up been bad and Butker is likely not 100%. Some pick'em spots have this at 48.5. as well.
