Week 8 Players to Buy, Sell, & Hold

Happy Hump Day, folks! In today’s newsletter, we’ll cover trade candidates, the best matchups for Week 8, and of course the happenings over at 4for4.

Using 4for4’s powerful trade evaluator tool, I’ll highlight players to buy, sell, and hold each week, but be sure to head over and check it out yourself based on your specific roster settings.

Buys

↠ RB Isiah Pacheco

After starting the season with a three-player committee, the Chiefs have appeared to hand the lead RB job to Pacheco. He’s averaged over 16 carries in each of the last four contests, with legitimate involvement in the passing game, leading to a 14-116-1 line through the air in that time frame.

Give up: A WR2 like Terry McLaurin or Michael Pittman

🏴‍☠️ WR Davante Adams

The past few games have been very un-Adams-like but he was dealing with a shoulder injury and Brian Hoyer under center In Week 7. Jimmy Garoppolo should be back this week in a get-right spot against a porous Detroit secondary.

Give up: An RB1 such as Josh Jacobs or Raheem Mostert.

Sells

🪖 WR Terry McLaurin

He’s still the clear WR1 for Washington but it’s tough to count on McLaurin from week to week. He’s only seen double-digit targets twice this season and has just one touchdown through seven contests. McLaurin’s fantasy playoff schedule is unsavory to boot, with tilts against the Rams and Jets in Weeks 15 and 16.

Look to Acquire: I’d aim for an RB2 like Isiah Pacheco or James Cook.

🪖 RB Brian Robinson

I don’t mean to pick on the Commanders this week but apparently, I’m suggesting a Washington estate sale. Their backfield is turning into a three-headed monster with rookie Chris Rodriguez seeing just one fewer carry last week than Robinson, and Antonio Gibson also getting some touches. There are a few stout run defenses on the horizon for Washington, so now is a solid time to sell.

Look to Acquire: A WR2 like Chris Olave or Nico Collins.

Hold

  • RB Bijan Robinson

  • WR D.J. Moore

  • WR CeeDee Lamb

  • WR Christian Kirk

  • RB Aaron Jones

Schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed, or aFPA, is 4for4’s answer to biased statistics. By removing bias, we can level the playing field and compare matchups in an "apples-to-apples" manner. This paints a more accurate picture for fantasy owners. By Week 4, we have a pretty good sample size to work from, but the data gets even more trustworthy as the season wears on. Once we hit Week 12, we'll start using rolling 10-week data so the numbers stay relevant.

Quarterbacks

 🪺 Lamar Jackson @ Cardinals

After last week’s monster performance, you don’t need a reason to start Jackson, but his matchup makes him an even better play. Arizona ranks 31st in QB aFPA, yielding 22.0 fantasy points to enemy QBs weekly in 2023.

⚜️ Derek Carr @ Colts

The Saints are struggling in real-life football, but Carr has been solid for fantasy purposes in recent weeks. He’s the QB12 in fantasy points per game over the last three contests and gets Indy’s 28th-ranked defensive unit in QB aFPA this week.

Running Backs

🦁 Jahmyr Gibbs vs. Raiders

Gibbs is coming off a 20-touch outing and gets a soft Raiders run defense this week. Las Vegas sits 27th in RB aFPA, surrendering 22.1 in half-PPR aFPA to opposing backfields on a per-game basis this season.

Isiah Pacheco @ Broncos

The KC rusher is ninth among RBs in touches per game since Week 4 (19.8) which has translated to 15.8 half-PPR points as the RB11 in that timeframe. Pacheco should post another solid number this week in Denver, as the Broncos rank dead-last in RB aFPA.

Wide Receivers

🐆 Christian Kirk @ Steelers

The target leader for the Jaguars, Kirk is set up for some fantasy goodness on Sunday as he takes on a Pittsburgh defense that is surrendering the most aFPA to the WR position so far in 2023.

 🪺 Zay Flowers @ Cardinals

The rookie isn’t the most consistent WR so far this year, but this is shaping up to be a favorable matchup for Lamar Jackson and his weaponry. Flowers gets an Arizona defense that is yielding 32.7 in WR aFPA per contest and the Ravens are on a high after a huge win.

Tight Ends

🧢 Darren Waller vs. Jets

The Darren Waller we all drafted is finally showing up, and this week should be another fruitful outing. He’s home against the Jets, who rank 30th in TE aFPA.

🤠 Jake Ferguson vs. Rams

Fresh off a bye, Ferguson should return to starting TE duties as one of the Cowboys’ primary receiving options. It also helps that the Rams are allowing the second-most half-PPR points to enemy TEs through the first even weeks of the season.
